Launched on August 7, 2025, GPT-5 succeeded GPT-4o as the default model for ChatGPT. A standout feature was its automatic routing capability, enabling ChatGPT to determine the depth of reasoning required based on user queries. OpenAI also reported a reduction in factual inaccuracies compared to its predecessor.
Apple integrated GPT-5 into its ecosystem with the release of iOS 26, iPadOS 26, and macOS Tahoe 26. This integration allowed ChatGPT requests, including those initiated via Siri and Writing Tools, to leverage GPT-5’s enhanced capabilities.

While OpenAI has not officially announced GPT-6, there are indications of its development. The internal Astra model family has reportedly advanced solutions to longstanding mathematical and computer science challenges. However, OpenAI has not explicitly identified Astra as GPT-6.
It’s worth noting that the release of GPT-5.6 underwent a brief security review by the U.S. government, suggesting that future model releases may be subject to similar scrutiny. Consequently, the timeline for GPT-6’s debut remains uncertain.
