Apple is moving forward with plans to bring OLED displays to the iMac and MacBook Air, but neither model is expected to make the transition in the near term.
Recent reporting from Bloomberg’s “Power On” newsletter reveals that prototypes are being trialed internally featuring OLED panels for both the iMac and MacBook Air lines. Still, the publicly-facing careful steps suggest no version with OLED is ready for release soon. In fact, Apple is said to be preparing iMac and Air refreshes that stick with existing LCD tech—anticipating a non-OLED iMac update in the coming days and a MacBook Air refresh early in 2027. OLED variants, by contrast, remain well down the timeline.
What the Rumors Suggest
Though discussions of OLED iMac and Air models are old news, the timeline has drifted significantly. A December 2025 supply chain report indicated that Apple might complete development of a 24-inch OLED iMac by 2027. However, by August 2026, those same sources pushed projections for an OLED iMac launch as far out as 2029.
For the MacBook Air, the shift to OLED appears set for a 2028 or 2029 timeframe. Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo recently stated that while earlier rumors favored a 2027 arrival, those were overly optimistic. As with the iMac, OLED development is in progress, but not yet ready to ship.
Display Upgrades Still in the Works—But Delayed
Following supply chain chatter, Apple has asked panel manufacturers like Samsung and LG to explore OLED offerings for large displays, particularly in the 24-inch iMac category. Desired specs reportedly include around 600 nits of brightness and a resolution density near 218 pixels per inch. Such a shift would improve contrast, raise power efficiency, and offer deeper blacks than current LCD-based models.
That said, Apple’s roadmap still uses LCDs and mini-LED panels for near-term updates. OLED remains tied to higher-end models like MacBook Pro, which are expected to transition earlier. The company appears to be treating OLED as a long game—introducing it gradually and preserving premium positioning in the process.
Supply constraints, the expense of large OLED panels, manufacturing challenges for true RGB OLED in bigger sizes, and the need to maintain product differentiation between Air and Pro all seem to be contributing to the delay.
🕰️ TL;DR:OLED is coming to both the iMac and MacBook Air, but 2026 and much of 2027 are likely to be OLED-free for those lines. Expect more meaningful OLED upgrades for these models only toward the end of the decade.
What this means, why it matters, and what to watch
This gradual rollout underscores how Apple continues to tightly control when and where it introduces marquee tech like OLED. For users seeking higher contrast, better battery efficiency, and richer visuals, the MacBook Pro is now the place to look. But for most Air or iMac buyers, OLED remains too far off to bet on now. In the coming months, watch for supply chain signals—like final spec sheets or manufacturing commitments—while keeping an eye on price pressure. As OLED matures and production scales, Apple may reset timelines and bring forward its planned OLED transitions.
