Apple is currently investigating a significant data breach involving Tata Electronics, one of its key manufacturing partners in India. The breach has led to the unauthorized release of confidential information pertaining to the upcoming iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max models.
The cyberattack resulted in the theft of sensitive documents, including detailed component designs, supplier lists, and images of the devices. Notably, at least six files have surfaced, showcasing hundreds of components such as main circuit board chips, battery specifications, and camera details. These documents bear Apple’s confidential watermarks and internal codenames for the iPhone 18 Pro models, along with images depicting the devices undergoing drop tests.
Visuals from the leaked files reveal a gray, slab-shaped handset featuring a triple rear-camera setup and the iconic Apple logo. This design aligns closely with the current iPhone 17 Pro, with anticipated minor changes like a reduced Dynamic Island.
Tata Electronics, which supplies and assembles certain iPhone components in India, has been instrumental in Apple’s strategy to diversify its manufacturing operations beyond China. The leaked data also exposes supplier-part relationships, information that Apple typically keeps confidential.
The breach was first disclosed by Tata Electronics last week, following the emergence of over 200,000 files on the dark web, reportedly shared by the ransom group World Leaks. These files, circulating since at least June 10, contain information not only about Apple but also about other companies like Tesla.
In response, Tata has restricted internal access to sensitive systems and engaged a global consultancy to perform a forensic audit. However, this incident has raised concerns about the potential impact on Apple’s partnership with Tata. Apple is actively collaborating with Tata to implement long-term security enhancements to prevent future breaches.
