Waymo has unveiled ‘Waymo Premier,’ a subscription-based loyalty program designed to reward frequent users of its robotaxi service. For a monthly fee of $29.99, members gain access to several exclusive benefits.
Subscribers will enjoy priority access to vehicles, effectively reducing wait times. Additionally, they will receive 10% cash back on every ride, with potential for increased rewards during peak periods. The program also includes five free ride cancellations per month, offering greater flexibility for users. Notably, Premier members can request rides in cities where Waymo’s service is still operating under a waitlist system.
However, the Premier program is currently unavailable in Austin and Atlanta. In these cities, Waymo’s robotaxis are accessible exclusively through the Uber app, limiting the implementation of the loyalty program.
This initiative coincides with Waymo’s ongoing expansion across the United States and its preparations for an international launch later this year. The company is also introducing its latest vehicle model, the Zeekr-built van named ‘Ojai,’ in Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco.
By introducing Waymo Premier, the company aims to establish a new revenue stream as it scales its operations. This approach mirrors strategies employed by partners like Uber, whose ‘Uber One’ membership program has attracted over 50 million subscribers paying $9.99 monthly for various perks, including discounts and waived fees.
Waymo determined the $29.99 monthly fee and associated benefits based on direct feedback from riders regarding their preferences for a membership program. Despite the higher cost compared to similar services, data indicates that users are willing to pay a premium for the convenience and features offered by Waymo’s autonomous ride-hailing service.
Introducing a loyalty program like Waymo Premier signifies a strategic move to enhance customer retention and generate additional revenue. As autonomous vehicle services become more competitive, offering value-added programs could be crucial in differentiating offerings and building a loyal user base.
