Uber Technologies has fully divested its stake in Serve Robotics, the autonomous delivery robot company that originated as Postmates X before spinning off in 2021. This move, disclosed in a recent regulatory filing, marks a significant shift in the relationship between the two companies.
Serve Robotics began as the robotics division of Postmates, focusing on developing autonomous sidewalk delivery robots. After Uber’s acquisition of Postmates in 2020, the division became an independent entity, with Uber as a strategic investor. The partnership between Uber and Serve included plans to deploy up to 2,000 delivery robots across multiple U.S. markets.
However, recent developments indicate a divergence in strategic priorities. Serve Robotics’ CEO, Ali Kashani, noted during a recent earnings call that delivery volumes through Uber declined for the first time after 17 consecutive quarters of growth. He attributed this to differing views on scaling the autonomous fleet, including aspects like fleet coordination and merchant integration. Consequently, Serve does not anticipate renewing its partnership agreement with Uber when it expires in early 2027.
Uber’s decision to sell its entire stake in Serve Robotics underscores the evolving dynamics in the autonomous delivery sector. As companies like Serve continue to innovate and expand their operations, the industry may witness further realignments and strategic shifts among key players.
