Threads Launches Live Chats for Real-Time Engagement During Major Events

Threads Unveils Live Chats to Enhance Real-Time Engagement During Major Events

Meta’s social media platform, Threads, has introduced a new feature called Live Chats, designed to facilitate real-time, public group conversations during significant cultural events. This initiative aims to make the app more timely and relevant by allowing users to engage actively as events unfold.

The debut of Live Chats coincides with the NBA Playoffs, launching within the NBA Threads community. Prominent media personalities such as Malika Andrews, Rachel Nichols, and Da Kid Gowie are set to host these live discussions during the games. Initially, the feature is available to a select group of creators, with plans for broader access in the future.

Live Chats enable up to 150 participants to send messages, photos, videos, links, and emoji reactions in real-time. Once this limit is reached, additional users can join in spectator mode, allowing them to view the conversation, react to messages, and participate in polls without actively contributing to the chat.

To join a Live Chat, users can access it from the top of a Community feed, through a shared post in their main feed, or by tapping the red live ring around a host’s profile photo. Although Live Chats conclude after a certain period, they remain open and publicly discoverable, allowing users to revisit the discussions.

Meta has implemented moderation tools to ensure a positive environment within Live Chats. Hosts have real-time controls to manage participants, including the ability to demote users to spectator mode or remove them from the chat. Additionally, Threads will automatically detect and remove messages that violate its policies, and users can report inappropriate content.

Looking ahead, Meta plans to enhance the Live Chats experience with features such as co-hosting capabilities, real-time play-by-play updates, lock-screen widgets highlighting live chat activity, and the ability to quote and share chat messages directly to Threads feeds.

By introducing Live Chats, Threads aims to foster a sense of community and engagement among users during live events, providing a platform for real-time interaction and discussion.
