Stripe to Acquire AI Gateway Startup OpenRouter for Over $7 Billion

Stripe, a leading financial technology company, is set to acquire OpenRouter, an AI gateway startup, for a sum exceeding $7 billion. This acquisition marks a significant expansion of Stripe’s services into the artificial intelligence sector.

OpenRouter, based in New York, offers a platform that allows users to access a variety of large language models through a unified interface. This service enables customers to select different AI models tailored to their specific tasks and budgetary constraints. As of May, OpenRouter reported having 8 million global users and providing access to over 400 AI models.

In May, OpenRouter secured a $113 million Series B funding round, which valued the company at approximately $1.3 billion. Notable investors in this round included Sequoia Capital, Andreessen Horowitz, Menlo Ventures, and Alphabet’s Capital G.

Alex Atallah, CEO of OpenRouter, has previously likened the company’s services to those of Stripe, emphasizing the provision of a single access point for various systems and the prevention of vendor lock-in. This comparison underscores the synergy between the two companies’ missions.

Reports of acquisition discussions between Stripe and OpenRouter emerged last month, culminating in the current agreement valued at over $7 billion. A spokesperson for Stripe declined to comment on these reports.

This acquisition signifies Stripe’s strategic move into the AI industry, potentially enhancing its service offerings and positioning it as a key player in the rapidly evolving AI landscape. Observers will be keen to see how Stripe integrates OpenRouter’s capabilities to provide innovative solutions to its clientele.
