Rime Secures $24M to Enhance AI-Powered Customer Call Handling

San Francisco-based startup Rime has secured $24 million in a Series A funding round led by M13 Ventures, with participation from Twilio Ventures, Corazon Capital, Unusual Ventures, and other existing investors. This investment aims to bolster Rime’s development of voice AI models designed to assist enterprises in managing customer calls more effectively.

Founded in 2022 by Lily Clifford, a former Stanford PhD student, Brooke Larson, an ex-Amazon Alexa engineer, and Stanford engineer Ares Geovanos, Rime differentiates itself by collecting its own conversational data through a dedicated recording studio in San Francisco. This approach allows the company to train its models on high-quality, proprietary data, reducing the need for extensive customization by clients.

Rime’s voice models are fine-tuned to accurately pronounce brand-specific and industry-specific terms. Utilizing a phoneme-based architecture, these models adapt to various pronunciations, enabling clients to deploy them without extensive retraining for their specific sectors.

Despite advancements in voice AI, many enterprises continue to rely on traditional interactive voice response (IVR) systems due to their proven effectiveness. Rime acknowledges this challenge and is focusing on developing speech-to-speech models to reduce latency, improve conversational flow, and handle background noise more effectively. This strategy aims to enhance the user experience and provide a more compelling alternative to existing IVR systems.

Rime’s client portfolio spans industries such as food service, healthcare, airlines, and fintech. Notable clients include Mayo Clinic, Dialpad, Upstart, and Asurion. The company reports that its tailored training data and model positioning have led to longer customer engagement during calls, contributing to the acquisition of significant enterprise contracts.

With the new funding, Rime plans to expand its 35-member team, focusing on model development, engineering, and partnerships. The company recently appointed Rafael Valle, formerly of Meta Superintelligence Labs and Nvidia’s applied deep learning audio research team, as its chief scientist.

As the voice AI market becomes increasingly competitive, Rime’s emphasis on proprietary data collection and model refinement positions it to offer enterprises a more effective and adaptable solution for managing customer interactions. This funding round underscores investor confidence in Rime’s approach and its potential to reshape enterprise customer service through advanced voice AI technology.
