Patreon Implements AI Bot Blocking to Protect Creators’ Content

Patreon, the membership platform supporting creators, has intensified its efforts to prevent artificial intelligence (AI) bots from scraping content without permission. Collaborating with internet infrastructure provider Cloudflare, Patreon is now actively blocking AI crawlers that attempt to use creators’ work for training AI models.

Previously, Patreon relied on the robots.txt file—a standard method for instructing web crawlers on permissible actions—to deter AI bots from accessing its content. However, this approach proved insufficient as many AI scrapers disregarded these directives and continued to extract data. Recognizing the need for more robust measures, Patreon has shifted from merely requesting compliance to enforcing it through direct blocking mechanisms.

The partnership with Cloudflare enables Patreon to implement AI Crawl Control technology, effectively preventing unauthorized AI bots from accessing the platform’s content. This initiative aims to safeguard the intellectual property of creators by ensuring that their work is not used to train AI models without explicit consent.

Patreon’s Chief Product Officer, Drew Rowny, emphasized the importance of this move, stating that creators deserve a meaningful say in how their work is utilized by AI companies. He highlighted that, unlike much of the internet where creators must accept AI training on their work to reach and grow an audience, Patreon offers a different vision—one where creators can expand their audience while maintaining control over their content’s usage.

In addition to blocking AI training bots, Patreon continues to allow crawlers that index pages and organize information to direct users back to the platform. This selective approach ensures that creators’ content remains discoverable through legitimate search engines while being protected from unauthorized AI data extraction.

Patreon’s proactive stance reflects a growing trend among online platforms to protect creators’ rights in the face of advancing AI technologies. By implementing these measures, Patreon sets a precedent for other platforms to follow, emphasizing the necessity of consent, credit, and compensation in the digital age.

As AI continues to evolve and integrate into various sectors, the balance between technological advancement and creators’ rights becomes increasingly critical. Patreon’s actions underscore the importance of establishing clear boundaries and protections to ensure that creators are not exploited by emerging technologies.
