OpenAI has announced a significant update to ChatGPT, removing limitations on text-based conversations for all users. This change coincides with the platform surpassing one billion weekly users.
The new default model, GPT-5.6 Luna, will now power the experience for Free and Go users, replacing the previous GPT-5.5 model. This upgrade aims to enhance the quality and responsiveness of interactions for users on these tiers.
In addition to unlimited text chats, Free and Go users will have access to a new “Think” button. This feature allows users to request higher reasoning power for more complex queries, providing more detailed and thoughtful responses when needed. However, existing limits on files, images, voice, and image generation will remain in place.
For Plus and Pro subscribers, OpenAI is introducing the GPT-5.6 Sol model, designed to improve performance in tasks such as quick questions, web research, advice, planning, writing, and decision-making. This model is expected to deliver more concise and robust answers, enhancing the overall user experience.
Additionally, Plus and Pro users will benefit from a “thinking slider,” enabling them to adjust the depth of reasoning the model applies to their queries. This customization allows users to tailor responses based on the complexity and requirements of their tasks.
Internal evaluations by OpenAI indicate that factual errors are 62% less common with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% less common with GPT-5.6 Sol compared to the previous GPT-5.5-Instant model. These improvements reflect OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing the accuracy and reliability of ChatGPT’s outputs.
The rollout of GPT-5.6 Sol for Plus and Pro users is effective immediately. Free and Go users can expect access to unlimited text chats and the new “Think” button within the coming week.
