Matic has unveiled ‘Matic Cues,’ a software update that enables voice and gesture controls for its robot vacuum and mop. This enhancement allows users to command the device directly without relying on smartphones or smart home systems.
With voice control, users can issue commands like ‘Hey Matic, vacuum the kitchen,’ prompting the robot to start cleaning the specified area. The system supports over 70 languages, making it accessible to a diverse user base. This feature is being rolled out to existing Matic devices via an over-the-air update and will be standard in new units.
Mehul Nariyawala, Matic’s co-founder, emphasized the company’s commitment to intuitive human-robot interaction. He stated that the goal is for the robot to adapt to natural human communication methods, eliminating the need for users to learn new interfaces. This approach aims to make the device user-friendly for all household members, including children and the elderly.
The voice control functionality is powered by Google Gemini, allowing for flexible and natural command recognition. Users can instruct the robot to vacuum, mop, or perform both tasks in specific rooms or throughout the entire home. Commands such as ‘Come here,’ ‘Follow me,’ or ‘Clean under the kitchen cabinets’ are understood, enhancing the device’s usability.
Privacy remains a priority for Matic. The voice control feature is opt-in, and the company ensures that all processing occurs on the device itself, with no data sent to the cloud unless explicitly authorized by the user. This design aligns with Matic’s commitment to user privacy and data security.
In addition to voice commands, Matic Cues introduces gesture control. Users can point at a mess, and the robot will recognize the gesture and clean the indicated area. This feature leverages the robot’s five-camera vision system, which comprehends rooms and objects in three dimensions, facilitating accurate and responsive cleaning.
