Apple’s first foldable, the iPhone Duo, was hands-on today — and it’s impressive where it counts. While the central crease is still visible in certain lighting, it’s nearly imperceptible thanks to a new nano-texture polymer inside display that cuts glare and hides the fold better than many rival Android models. Apple claims the material is built with precise, laser-lithographed micro-lenses to produce a matte, flat-looking interior.
Design & displays: what it’s really like
The Duo folds into a compact device with an exterior screen measuring 5.4 inches — smaller than Apple’s iPhone 18 Pro when closed — but unfolds to a 7.6-inch interior panel. Alongside the new display surface, Apple slipped the selfie camera under the inner screen. It disappears against lighter backgrounds, but under darker ones the camera’s location becomes noticeable.
In terms of usability, iOS has been rethought: when open, closed, or half-folded, the UI shifts controls toward whichever screen edge makes one-handed operation easier. There’s a vertical dock, and the status bar tucks neatly into the top corner. Multitasking lets you run two apps side-by-side or even two instances of the same app, though each takes up exactly half the open display — resizing isn’t an option yet. Apps can be grouped together so a pair of them launch simultaneously.
Cameras & features: folding in new ideas
The Duo maps out its photo system with two 48-megapixel rear cameras: one main, one ultra wide. There’s no optical telephoto lens; “2x zoom” comes via the main camera crop. Up front, the outer display houses a 12MP camera.
Apple rolled in features tailored for foldable behavior. A “Smart Take” mode holds off shutter until everyone is framed, ideal for group shots. Time-lapse video gets a Dolby Vision treatment with the Duo’s ability to self-stand. Peek through “Duo Preview” using the outer display to roughly angle a shot. Kid-friendly animations appear too when the phone is closed (“Kid Cue”), and FaceTime supports using both screens so everyone in a call can be seen from each display.
Powering it all is Apple’s A20 Pro chip, shared with the iPhone 18 Pro, paired with the new C2-class modem for faster, more efficient 5G, including mmWave in the United States.
Price, availability, and final thoughts
The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 for a model with 256GB storage. A 2TB model will run $3,199. Pre-orders kick off October 16; deliveries begin October 23.
This is Apple’s most premium device to date. The frame feels sturdy and craftsmanship is top tier. Small touches like fold preservation via visco-elastic adhesives are meant to enhance durability, though only time will tell how this device holds up under regular folding.
What matters here is this: Apple’s first foldable isn’t flawless — the crease hasn’t been eliminated entirely, nor has the camera technology matched competitors’ telephoto strength. But the Duo brings software, hardware and design together in a way that suggests this is more than an experiment. If it holds its form and function over time, the Duo could set a new standard for what a premium foldable should be. Expect the real test to come after launch.
