Harvey Soars to $15.5B Valuation After Massive Fundraise

Harvey, an AI startup focused on legal tech, has secured a new $550 million funding round, pushing its valuation to $15.5 billion. This announcement comes just months after a prior raise in March that valued the company at $11 billion, and a December round that pegged its worth at $8 billion. The latest funding was co-led by Diffusion and Lightspeed Venture Partners.

Since 2023, Harvey has completed at least eight priced funding rounds—including five rounds since 2025. Some were extensions, but this latest investment could likely be considered a Series F. With this new capital, Harvey has raised more than $1.55 billion in total. Over roughly nine months, it has nearly doubled its valuation.

Harvey’s Own Model Shows Its Maturation

A few weeks ahead of the funding announcement, Harvey unveiled its in-house model called Tenet. Built from an open-weight model named Kimi K3, Tenet was post-trained using legal data. The development was supported by Fireworks, an inference provider that has worked with Cursor on its proprietary model. Harvey is now also encouraging its clients to post-train their own open-weight AI models.

This move underscores a notable shift in the legal AI sector. Rather than relying solely on frontier labs like OpenAI or Anthropic for cutting-edge models, Harvey is showing how companies can build domain-specific, high-performing AI solutions using more accessible open-weight foundations.

Why This Matters

Harvey’s rapid valuation climb and its choice to build and promote its own AI model reflect larger trends in artificial intelligence this year. Investors are increasingly putting big money behind legal tech, especially when AI is involved. Meanwhile, the company’s emphasis on open-weight models signals growing confidence in building strong performance without depending exclusively on “closed source” frontier models.

This development also raises expectations for competition. Other legal AI startups will find themselves under pressure to make similar investments in model research, domain specialization, and customer empowerment. The integration of legal data with open-weight AI could lower barriers and shift how legal services are delivered.

Harvey’s leap to a $15.5 billion valuation is a milestone not just in its own story, but in the broader maturing of AI-powered legal tools. Keep an eye on how other startups respond, and whether this trend pushes for more domain-specific, open-weight approaches across verticals.
