The lawsuit contends that Kalshi utilized FlightAware’s information to facilitate betting markets on flight cancellations without obtaining proper consent.
Approximately a month ago, Kalshi introduced markets allowing users to wager on the number of flight cancellations across the United States or at specific airports. FlightAware asserts that Kalshi employed its data and displayed its branding in these markets without authorization. Despite FlightAware’s demands to cease such usage, Kalshi allegedly continued these practices.
The lawsuit emphasizes that Kalshi did not inform FlightAware about its reliance on FlightAware’s data for determining the outcomes of these betting markets. FlightAware claims it became aware of Kalshi’s flight cancellation bets only after media outlets began reporting on them.
Kalshi operates as a prediction market platform, enabling users to place bets on various future events, including political elections and entertainment outcomes. However, these platforms have faced scrutiny due to potential manipulation and insider trading risks. For instance, there have been instances where individuals used privileged information to place bets, leading to significant payouts.
