OpenAI has unveiled a new feature for ChatGPT and Codex on macOS called Computer History, designed to enhance the AI’s understanding of user activity across various applications and websites. This opt-in feature creates a searchable timeline of user interactions, enabling ChatGPT to offer more contextually relevant assistance.
Computer History serves as a successor to the earlier Chronicle feature, which was introduced as an experimental tool earlier this year. Unlike Chronicle, which relied on capturing screenshots, Computer History records interaction events such as clicks, typing, keyboard shortcuts, and app switches. This approach leverages macOS accessibility features to monitor user activity without capturing visual data.
To activate Computer History, users must opt in through the ChatGPT desktop app’s settings. The feature is disabled by default, ensuring that users have full control over their data. Once enabled, users can select which applications and websites contribute to their history, pause data collection, and review or delete their recorded activity at any time. Notably, private browsing sessions are excluded from this data collection.
OpenAI emphasizes that Computer History does not capture screenshots, screen recordings, microphone input, or system audio. Interaction events are temporarily stored on the user’s Mac for up to 48 hours before being processed on OpenAI’s servers to generate memories. Importantly, these events are not retained by OpenAI after processing.
Currently, Computer History is available to ChatGPT Pro, Business, and Enterprise users. Business and Enterprise administrators must enable access before workspace members can activate the feature. Initial availability excludes the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland, and the United Kingdom.
By introducing Computer History, OpenAI aims to provide a more personalized and efficient user experience. The feature allows ChatGPT to recall recent activities, assist with ongoing tasks, and suggest automations based on user behavior. This development reflects OpenAI’s commitment to enhancing AI-human interaction by making ChatGPT more attuned to individual workflows.
