Blacksmith’s Valuation Soars to $550M Amid AI Coding Surge

In a significant development within the software development industry, Blacksmith, a startup specializing in AI-driven code testing, has secured a $45 million Series B funding round. This latest investment, led by Peak XV Partners with participation from existing backers GV and Y Combinator, elevates the company’s valuation to $550 million—a nearly tenfold increase from its $60 million valuation less than a year prior.

Established in 2024, Blacksmith offers a platform that enables companies to build, test, and verify software before deployment. The startup has experienced rapid growth, expanding its customer base from over 700 to more than 5,000 clients in under a year. Notable customers include Mercury, Supabase, Clerk, Ashby, and Expensify.

The proliferation of AI coding tools such as Cursor, OpenAI’s Codex, and Anthropic’s Claude Code has streamlined code generation processes. However, ensuring the quality of AI-generated code remains a challenge. Blacksmith addresses this by providing solutions that validate code efficiently, mitigating potential bottlenecks in the development pipeline.

Initially, Blacksmith functioned as a cloud provider for continuous integration (CI) workloads, facilitating software builds and tests essential for code validation. The company has since expanded its offerings with Codesmith, an AI coding agent capable of automatically rectifying failed code checks.

With a lean team of approximately 30 employees, Blacksmith has achieved an annualized revenue run rate in the tens of millions of dollars. Some of its largest clients reportedly invest over $1 million annually in the platform.

Despite operating in a competitive landscape alongside GitHub Actions, Cursor Automations, and AI code-testing services from major cloud providers like AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud, Blacksmith differentiates itself through the speed and affordability of its code testing solutions.

Looking ahead, Blacksmith plans to broaden its suite of coding tools, aiming to assist developers in writing, validating, and merging software more efficiently.

The substantial increase in Blacksmith’s valuation underscores the growing importance of AI-driven solutions in software development. As the industry continues to embrace AI for code generation, the demand for robust validation tools is likely to escalate, positioning Blacksmith favorably in the market.
