Apple has just announced the AirPods 5, overhauling its entry-level true wireless option with far better noise suppression and sound fidelity. Unveiled during the company’s “Surprise and Shine” event, the new earbuds include features previously exclusive to premium models, but start at a modest $129. Expect preorders today, with units arriving September 18.
What’s New in AirPods 5
One of the biggest changes is the introduction of Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on the standard AirPods line. Apple claims the new model reduces external noise by up to 50% more than the AirPods 4 offered with noise cancelling capability. The sound profile has been improved via an updated Adaptive EQ, while a redesigned acoustic layout boosts clarity and detail.
Beyond ANC, the device also gets an enhanced Transparency mode designed to make external voices and ambient sounds come through more naturally. Two features—Adaptive Audio and Conversation Awareness—auto-adjust settings: the former hybridizes ANC and Transparency according to surroundings, while the latter lowers volume automatically when you start speaking. Live Translation support is also in the mix, provided it’s paired with a compatible iPhone and has Apple Intelligence enabled.
Two Tiers: Base vs. Wireless Charging Model
There are two versions of AirPods 5. The base model, priced at $129, offers the updated sound architecture, ANC, and core features. The $149 variant adds a Wireless Charging Case—which supports both Apple Watch chargers and Qi pads—and grants swipe-based volume control on the stems, plus better battery life. Apple claims up to five hours of listening with ANC active, or 22 hours of total playback time with the charging case.
Preorders kick off today, with the new AirPods available to buy on September 18. Both versions are expected to go on sale simultaneously. Details on color options or additional accessories weren’t emphasized in today’s reveal.
What this launches signifies is a blurring of lines between budget and premium in Apple’s audio lineup—features once confined to the Pro models are now more affordable. For consumers, that means more choice and better value at lower price points. A key question going forward will be how ANC performance in real-world use stacks up against the Pro series—and whether Apple will use this new base tier to upsell audio accessories like the Wireless Charging Case or other premium perks. Keep an ear out for reviews once AirPods 5 reach customers, especially comparing fit, noise isolation, and long-term battery behavior.
