Today Apple introduced the Watch Series 12, bringing fresh internal upgrades and enhanced health-tracking features. Powered by the new S11 chip, it adds all-day heart rate sensing, upgraded sensors, and expanded materials options including ceramic models.
Design and Build
The Series 12 comes in several finishes: aluminum in Space Gray, Black, Light Gold, and Dark Bronze with a Ceramic Shield on the aluminum models that boosts screen toughness by about 60%. Polished titanium models appear in Radiant Gold and Natural, while the ceramic cases are offered in Pearl White and Night Blue tones.
Sensors, Health Features & Audio Intelligence
A redesigned health module improves skin contact during ECG via larger electrode surfaces. Photodiodes are now arranged in a ring for better light capture, while the green LEDs used in heart rate tracking are larger and more energy efficient. Apple claims this new system delivers the most accurate heart rate tracking among wearables, backed by tests during running, cycling, and HIIT, using ECG chest straps as benchmarks.
A new Readiness feature analyzes vital and activity data, plus sleep patterns each morning, to suggest whether users should recover, take it easy, or push harder during the day. The Health app also gets transformed: with a Health Age metric that combines VO2 max, sleep quality, and blood test markers to evaluate users’ biological versus chronological age. Users can input lab data manually or sync medical records; in the U.S., there’s an optional Quest blood panel covering 50+ biomarkers for $119. A new VO2 max assessment uses both iPhone camera and Apple Watch during a sequence of exercises. These health updates are set to roll out later this year.
Audio Intelligence features powered by the S11 chip include Sound Recognition, which can detect alarms, doorbells, or a baby crying, and a Live Rewind tool displaying what was said in the preceding 15 seconds. Siri Recap summarizes key points from conversations in the Siri app; it’s opt-in and able to run on schedule or via Control Center. Apple emphasizes that these features don’t store or transmit raw audio. Siri Recap is launching in beta later this year, initially in English.
