Apple is rolling out a special perk for anyone who buys the new iPhone Duo in person at U.S. Apple Store locations. When the device is turned on for the first time, the boot-up screen will greet the buyer by name in English or Spanish—a personal touch that will only apply to in-store purchases of the iPhone Duo.
Setup Surprise Exclusively for U.S. Stores
On October 23, when the iPhone Duo officially hits stores and begins deliveries, in-store purchasers will see their name displayed as part of the “Hello” welcome message. This isn’t a feature offered to online or third-party buyers—it’s reserved specifically for those who pick up their devices at Apple’s own retail locations within the U.S.
This scenario was revealed by Apple insider Mark Gurman, who also noted the name-enabled boot will support both English and Spanish. It’s not yet known how Apple will technically pull this off, though there are suggestions it may be linked to “Presto,” the tech the company uses to update software on sealed iPhone boxes without removing them. However, no confirmation has emerged regarding that route.
Preorders & Timing
Preorders for the iPhone Duo begin on October 16. Then, starting October 23, those who reserved the phone or purchase it in stores will have access to the device—and in-store buyers will receive the personalized greeting on first boot. Customers based in the U.S. preparing for preorders are expected to get set up starting October 12.
The special greeting is part of Apple’s retail setup system enhancements. The name may be entered during checkout and used to generate the customized startup message. This level of customization reflects Apple’s ongoing efforts to make the ownership experience feel more personalized.
All this applies only to first-time setup at U.S. Apple Stores. Buyers outside the U.S., or those purchasing via Apple’s online store or third-party retailers, likely won’t receive the same first-boot personalization.
Analytical angle: This move from Apple is a clever blend of emotional branding and in-store engagement. By making the first interaction with the iPhone Duo feel personal—literally putting your name on the boot screen—Apple boosts retailer foot traffic and enhances the customer experience. It’s reminiscent of prior efforts like laser engraving on Apple Watch or product engraving, but goes deeper because it activates at a pivotal moment: turning on a brand-new device. Keep an eye on whether Apple expands the feature globally, adds more languages, or offers similar surprises for future launches. Such small but meaningful touches may become a staple of Apple’s retail strategy.
