YouTube has announced significant updates to its platform, including an expansion of the Premium Lite subscription and revised criteria for the YouTube Partner Program (YPP).
Expansion of YouTube Premium Lite
Premium Lite, YouTube’s more affordable subscription tier, is set to become available in all countries where the standard Premium service is offered. This expansion aims to provide users with an ad-free viewing experience at a lower cost. Notably, creators will receive 60% of the net subscription revenue from Premium Lite, which is higher than the 30% share from standard Premium subscriptions. This adjustment reflects YouTube’s commitment to supporting its creator community by offering more favorable revenue-sharing terms.
Revised Monetization Requirements
In a move to enhance content quality and creator engagement, YouTube is doubling the requirements for channel monetization under the YPP. Effective February 1, 2027, channels will need to meet the following criteria:
- 8,000 watch hours in the past 365 days or 20 million qualified Shorts views in the past 90 days
- 1,000 subscribers
These updated thresholds are designed to encourage creators to produce more engaging and high-quality content. Existing YPP members will not be immediately affected but will need to accept the updated terms to continue monetizing their content.
These changes underscore YouTube’s ongoing efforts to balance user experience with creator support. By expanding Premium Lite and adjusting monetization requirements, YouTube aims to foster a more sustainable and rewarding environment for content creators while offering viewers more subscription options.
