X Launches AI-Powered Custom Timelines for Enhanced User Content Personalization

X Unveils AI-Driven Custom Timelines for Personalized User Experience

In a significant enhancement to its platform, X has introduced Grok-powered Custom Timelines, enabling users to engage with over 75 curated topics directly from their home tab. This development marks one of the most substantial updates to the app, leveraging Grok’s artificial intelligence to not only construct these timelines but also tailor them to individual user preferences.

The rollout of Custom Timelines coincides with X’s decision to discontinue X Communities, a feature that allowed users to form member-based groups around various subjects but experienced a decline in usage. Nikita Bier, X’s head of product, highlighted that these new timelines are particularly effective for topics users already interact with. Unlike traditional methods that rely on keywords or hashtags, Grok’s AI comprehensively analyzes each post, assigns relevant topic labels, and curates content accordingly. This integration is facilitated by xAI, the parent company of Grok, which acquired X last year, further intertwining the two services.

Initially, the Custom Timelines feature is available exclusively to Premium subscribers on iOS devices, with plans to extend support to Android users in the near future. All tiers of the Premium subscription can access this functionality.

To utilize Custom Timelines, users can navigate past their For You and Following feeds, as well as any pinned personal lists, and tap the plus (+) sign to select which custom timelines to pin to their home tab. Users can pin up to 10 topics or lists and have the option to reorder them as desired. Once pinned, these feeds are accessible directly from the home tab across all platforms.

An observation during the initial use of Custom Timelines is the placement of advertisements in the second position of each feed. This strategy suggests that X has identified a new avenue to expand its advertising inventory, a crucial move considering the reported struggles in X’s ad business since Elon Musk’s acquisition.

The available topics for Custom Timelines are diverse, encompassing categories such as Business & Finance, Sports, Technology, Politics, Stocks & Economy, News, Science, Movies & TV, Food & Drink, Art, Real Estate, Home & Garden, Beauty, Education, Gaming, and more. Specific sports categories include American football, baseball, basketball, boxing, soccer, golf, MMA & wrestling, racing & motorsports, rugby, snow sports, ice hockey, tennis, cricket, Formula 1, cycling, and the Olympics. Pop culture and technology enthusiasts can follow topics like celebrities, music, concerts, country music, dance, electronic music, fashion, pop, K-pop, J-pop, podcasts, hip hop, jazz, Artificial Intelligence, and Cryptocurrency. Other general categories include anime, digital art, photography, career, pets, design, marriage & family, shopping, mental health, and more.

Notably, the initial set of news-related topics prominently features the Iran Conflict, Crime, and Elections. While this likely reflects current discussions on X, it also underscores how product decisions can influence the news content users encounter. A more organized approach might involve categorizing these options into broader high-level categories listed alphabetically, with subcategories appearing upon selection. This structure would allow X to expand its news categories beyond these initial three.

Concerns may arise regarding the construction of these timelines by Grok, which aims to be politically neutral and truth-seeking but has, in practice, occasionally exhibited biases or amplified misinformation. However, initial testing of the custom timelines did not reveal any overt political leanings. The feeds included content from a range of outlets such as ABC, CBS, CSPAN, AP, Reuters, AFP, Daily Beast, The Hill, Foreign Policy, Puck, The Atlantic, The Economist, Bloomberg, Al Jazeera, Forbes, and the BBC, alongside commentary from various pundits.

The impact of Custom Timelines on user engagement with X remains to be seen. Typically, users prefer to see content they care about in their main algorithmic feed. However, Custom Timelines offer an opportunity to explore new interests or delve into specific topics as needed—such as accessing a sports feed during a game. Combined with X’s new Snooze Topics option for the For You feed, users can more precisely tailor their X experience to their preferences.

In summary, X’s introduction of AI-powered Custom Timelines represents a significant step toward enhancing user engagement and personalization on the platform. By leveraging Grok’s AI capabilities, X offers a more tailored and diverse content experience, potentially setting a new standard for social media platforms.
