WhatsApp Tests Green Dot to Indicate Online Contacts on iPhone

WhatsApp is currently testing a new feature in its iOS beta version that introduces a green dot to indicate when a contact is online. This feature, which first appeared in the Android beta last month, is now being evaluated by iPhone users.

The green dot appears on a contact’s profile photo within the chat info screen, accessible by tapping the contact’s name at the top of a conversation. This real-time indicator disappears as soon as the contact goes offline, providing users with immediate awareness of a contact’s availability.

To address privacy concerns, WhatsApp has implemented safeguards for this feature. If a user has chosen to hide their online status in the privacy settings, the green dot will not be displayed for that contact. Additionally, the indicator only shows when the app is actively open, ensuring that users are not marked as online when the app is running in the background.

Currently, the green dot is visible only within the chat info screen and does not appear in the main chat list or conversation view. However, there are indications that WhatsApp is developing a Contacts screen that will list contacts who are currently online or were recently active, potentially increasing the visibility of this feature in the future.

As with many beta features, this update is being rolled out to a limited number of users initially. Therefore, even if you are using the latest beta version, you may not see the green dot feature immediately.

Introducing a visual indicator for online status aligns WhatsApp with other messaging platforms that offer similar features. This addition could enhance user experience by making it easier to identify active contacts, thereby facilitating more immediate and responsive communication. However, the emphasis on privacy controls ensures that users maintain autonomy over their online visibility, balancing functionality with user privacy preferences.
