WhatsApp is developing a new feature that allows messages to disappear immediately after being read by the recipient. This enhancement builds upon the existing disappearing messages functionality, offering users greater control over their privacy.
According to WABetaInfo, the latest beta version of WhatsApp includes an ‘After reading’ option within the ‘Default message timer’ settings. Users can configure messages to vanish after being read, with timers set to 5 minutes, 1 hour, or 12 hours post-read. Unread messages will automatically disappear after 24 hours.
Previously, WhatsApp introduced the ‘View Once’ feature for photos and videos, enabling media to be viewed only once before deletion. The new ‘After reading’ option extends this ephemeral messaging capability to text messages, providing a more comprehensive privacy solution.
Currently, this feature is available to select beta testers on both iOS and Android platforms. While there’s no official release date, the presence of this feature in beta versions suggests a broader rollout may be forthcoming.
As reported by 9to5Mac, this development underscores WhatsApp’s commitment to enhancing user privacy and control over their messaging experience.
Integrating ‘Read Once’ messages into WhatsApp’s suite of privacy features reflects the growing demand for ephemeral communication options. Users seeking more transient interactions will likely appreciate this addition, aligning WhatsApp with competitors offering similar functionalities.
