WhatsApp is actively developing its own cloud storage solution for iPhone users, aiming to provide an alternative to Apple’s iCloud for chat backups. This initiative was identified in the latest TestFlight beta version of WhatsApp for iOS, where users may soon have the option to select between iCloud and WhatsApp’s proprietary cloud service for storing their chat histories.
Currently, WhatsApp users on iOS rely on iCloud to back up their chats, which can quickly consume the limited free storage available, especially when backups include extensive media files. The forthcoming WhatsApp cloud service is expected to offer 2GB of free storage, with potential paid plans extending up to 1TB, providing users with more flexible storage options.
A significant aspect of this development is the emphasis on security. While end-to-end encryption for iCloud backups is optional and requires manual activation, WhatsApp’s own backup service will have end-to-end encryption enabled by default, with no option to disable it. Users will be encouraged to secure their backups using a passkey, but alternatives like a password or a 64-digit encryption key will also be supported. This approach ensures that only the user can access their encrypted backups, enhancing data privacy.
In parallel, WhatsApp is working on a similar cloud backup solution for Android users, aiming to reduce dependence on Google Drive. This cross-platform development indicates a strategic move by WhatsApp to offer a unified and secure backup solution across different operating systems.
By introducing its own cloud backup service, WhatsApp is addressing user concerns about storage limitations and data security. This move not only provides users with more control over their data but also strengthens WhatsApp’s position in the competitive messaging app market by offering enhanced privacy features.
