WeWard, a mobile application that incentivizes walking by offering rewards, has unveiled a new feature named “Walking Mode.” This functionality enables users to restrict access to selected apps until they achieve a predetermined step count, aiming to encourage physical activity while simultaneously reducing screen time.
Users can customize which applications to lock and set specific step goals. For instance, to limit time spent on social media platforms like TikTok or Instagram, a user might configure the app to unlock these services only after completing 3,000 steps. This personalized approach allows individuals to tailor the feature to their lifestyle and fitness objectives.
Prior to this update, WeWard motivated users by awarding “Wards,” an in-app currency redeemable for cash, gift cards, or charitable donations. The platform also includes a gamified leaderboard, fostering friendly competition among users. The addition of “Walking Mode” aligns with the app’s mission to promote healthier habits by addressing the common desire to decrease unnecessary phone usage.
Supported by tennis champion and angel investor Venus Williams, the France-based WeWard reports a user base of 30 million across 29 countries, including 4 million in the United States. The company claims that its platform has led to an average increase in walking time by nearly 25% among users.
Co-founder Yves Benchimol emphasized the company’s commitment to fostering real-world healthy behaviors rather than merely capturing user attention. He expressed hope that “Walking Mode” would inspire broader discussions about mindful design and the definition of success within the tech industry.
WeWard highlights that users typically spend only a few minutes daily within the app, viewing this as a positive indicator that the platform does not seek to monopolize user attention. Unlike some reward-based applications that monetize by selling user data to third parties, WeWard asserts that it generates revenue through in-app purchases, affiliate marketing, premium subscriptions, and advertising.
