Recent data from the Ramp AI Index reveals that the top 1% of companies, termed “AI-pilled” firms, are allocating approximately $7,500 per employee each month toward artificial intelligence initiatives. This expenditure, while substantial, remains below the average monthly salary of a software engineer, which is around $16,000.
In contrast, the top 10% of companies invest about $611 per employee monthly, and the median expenditure across firms is a modest $11.38 per employee. Despite these varying levels of investment, AI spending continues to rise. Among the most AI-focused firms, there was a 14.1% increase in per-employee AI spending last month.
These companies often diversify their AI strategies by utilizing multiple advanced models and platforms, including more cost-effective open-source options. This approach allows them to balance innovation with budget considerations.
As AI becomes increasingly integral to business operations, companies must carefully assess their investment strategies to ensure they are achieving a favorable return on investment without overspending.
