Apple has quietly introduced a beefed-up version of the OLED iPad mini: the 512GB variant now includes a six-core CPU (two high-performance cores and four efficiency cores) and a Dual 16-core Neural Engine. It’s part of the company’s latest iPad mini lineup that also offers 128GB and 256GB models with a slightly less powerful five-core CPU setup and a single 16-core Neural Engine. All models share a seven-core GPU, hardware-accelerated ray tracing, and Neural Accelerators integrated into each GPU core.
OLED Display, Nano-Texture, and Pricing
The new iPad mini features an 8.5-inch Super Retina XDR OLED display with rounded corners. Brightness reaches up to 1,200 nits for HDR content, full-screen HDR or SDR performance at 600 nits, and a minimum of 1 nit for low-light visibility. A contrast ratio of 2,000,000:1 adds deep blacks and dynamic imagery. There’s no ProMotion refresh rate; Apple focused instead on visual clarity and luminance rather than high refresh.
An optional nano-texture glass finish is available on the 256GB and 512GB models, designed to reduce glare—useful outdoors. That option carries a price premium and adds an Apple polishing cloth in the package. Pricing starts at $699 for the base 128GB Wi-Fi model, and Wi-Fi + Cellular versions begin at $849.
Performance, Audio, and Extras
Under the hood lies Apple’s A20 Pro chip, built on a 2-nanometer process. That delivers sizeable gains: graphics up to 2.7× faster, AI tasks up to 4.5× faster, and a roughly 60% boost in multithreaded CPU performance over the previous mini, especially visible on the 512GB model. Unified memory bandwidth is also notably improved.
Audio sees a redesign called “Acoustic Display,” which places woofers behind the screen for richer bass, with tweeters nestled within the frame for crisp highs. The sealed design supports an IP67 rating for dust and water resistance. On cameras, the iPad mini now sports a 12-MP Center Stage front camera aligned along the landscape edge and a 12-MP rear camera with Smart HDR 4 and 4K/60fps video. Connectivity has been upgraded with Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, Thread support, and faster cellular using Apple’s new C2 modem. The device will ship with iPadOS 27.
Pre-orders begin October 28, with deliveries and in-store availability starting November 6. The new mini comes in “midnight” and “starlight” finishes, and in 128GB, 256GB, and 512GB storage capacities.
This upgraded 512GB iPad mini marks Apple’s strategy of rewarding top-tier storage buyers with notably higher performance and neural computing capability. It broadens the product premium, especially relevant now as AI and creative workflows increasingly demand local compute and tooling. Going forward, watch whether this model becomes the standard for demanding users (creatives, AI developers, field workers), and whether Apple will extend these performance differences across more storage tiers in future iPad-series updates.
