Spotify has unveiled a new feature tailored for runners, enhancing its app with a dedicated running mode. This addition aims to provide a personalized audio experience by selecting music that aligns with various phases of a run, taking into account the user’s tempo and musical preferences.
Available to Premium subscribers, the running mode can be accessed through the Fitness Hub within the Spotify app. Users can choose from 25 presets, each designed for different workout types such as interval runs, steady runs, or pyramid sessions. Further customization options include setting the duration, beats per minute (BPM), and preferred music genres, allowing runners to tailor their audio experience to their specific training needs.
Beyond music selection, the running mode offers audio cues to guide users through different stages of their run. Currently, this feature supports English language prompts, providing real-time feedback and motivation during workouts.
This development builds upon Spotify’s ongoing integration of artificial intelligence into its platform. Over the past year, the company has been testing AI-driven features, including prompted playlists, which have been particularly popular among users creating fitness and workout playlists. The introduction of the running mode is a direct response to these user behaviors, aiming to enhance the workout experience through intelligent music curation.
Earlier this year, Spotify expanded its fitness-related offerings by partnering with fitness device manufacturer Peloton, further solidifying its presence in the fitness and wellness sector.
The launch of the running mode comes shortly after fitness app Strava announced the discontinuation of its Record feature’s integration with Spotify. This move positions Spotify to fill the gap for users seeking a seamless audio experience during their runs.
As of Wednesday, the running mode is available to Premium users on iOS devices in select countries, including the U.S., Canada, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Sweden.
By introducing this AI-powered running mode, Spotify is not only enhancing its service offerings but also tapping into the growing market of fitness enthusiasts who rely on music to boost their performance. This strategic move could attract a broader user base and strengthen Spotify’s position in the competitive streaming industry.
