Snapchat has introduced ‘Now Playing,’ a new feature that integrates Spotify with Snap Map, allowing users to share their current music listening activity with friends. This enhancement transforms Snap Map into a dynamic platform for real-time music sharing and discovery.
To utilize ‘Now Playing,’ users must link their Spotify accounts to Snapchat. Once connected, their current listening activity appears on Snap Map, visible to selected friends. Tapping on a song within the map provides options to open it in Spotify, save it to ‘Liked Songs,’ or explore related Snapchat Spotlight videos featuring the same track. Additionally, users can save songs directly to Spotify from Spotlight videos and Snapchat’s Sound Pages.
Privacy is a key consideration in this feature. Snapchat offers four visibility settings for sharing music activity:
- Friends: Share with all friends on Snapchat.
- Friends on the Map: Share only with friends who have access to your location.
- Select Friends: Choose specific friends to share with.
- No One: Do not share your listening activity.
Users can adjust these settings to control who sees their music activity, ensuring a personalized sharing experience.
Currently, ‘Now Playing’ is available in regions where both Snapchat and Spotify operate, with plans to expand to Canada soon. While the feature presently supports only Spotify, there are indications that Snapchat intends to integrate additional music streaming services in the future.
This development builds upon Snapchat’s previous music-related features. In 2020, the platform introduced Snapchat Sounds, enabling users to add song clips to Snaps and Stories, which could then be opened in Spotify, Apple Music, or SoundCloud. The ‘Now Playing’ feature represents a further step in enhancing social music sharing within the app.
Beyond Snapchat, Spotify has been enhancing its social features. Earlier this year, Spotify’s iOS app introduced opt-in ‘Listening Activity’ and ‘Request to Jam’ features, fostering more interactive listening experiences. Similarly, Instagram launched a real-time Spotify status for its Notes feature, reflecting a broader trend towards integrating music sharing into social media platforms.
In contrast, Apple Music’s upcoming iOS 27 update focuses on improving user experience with features like landscape playback, enhanced AutoMix transitions, redesigned artist pages, and new extra-large widgets, rather than emphasizing real-time social sharing.
The introduction of ‘Now Playing’ on Snap Map signifies a growing convergence between social media and music streaming services. By enabling users to share their musical tastes in real time, Snapchat not only enhances user engagement but also opens new avenues for music discovery. This trend underscores the evolving landscape of digital interaction, where sharing personal experiences, including music preferences, becomes increasingly integrated into social platforms.
