Situational Awareness, an AI-focused hedge fund, has invested $400 million into Source Foundry, a startup founded by Stanford researchers aiming to make chip manufacturing faster and cheaper. This brings its total investment in Source Foundry to $500 million.
Founded by former OpenAI researcher Leopold Aschenbrenner in 2024, Situational Awareness initially saw strong returns but faced steep losses recently due to the decline in AI infrastructure stocks. In July, the fund sold off the majority of its public portfolio to Citadel, reducing its assets under management from $20 billion to $10 billion, though it retained its shares in Anthropic.
Despite these setbacks, the substantial investment in Source Foundry indicates a strategic shift towards private investments in emerging technologies. This move reflects a broader trend among hedge funds to diversify portfolios and seek opportunities in high-growth sectors like semiconductor innovation.
