Serious Modem Zero-Day in Pixel Phones Actively Exploited

Google has revealed a highly critical zero-day vulnerability, tracked as CVE-2026-58704, in the device modem of Pixel phones. This flaw, confirmed to be exploited in targeted attacks, allows attackers in close proximity to bypass permissions and escalate their privileges—all without any user interaction. The patch for this exploit is included in the September 5, 2026 security update, and all users are strongly urged to install it immediately.

What the Vulnerability Enables

The flaw is an elevation-of-privilege issue rooted in a logic error within the modem’s authorization and protection mechanisms. An attacker who’s already nearby—say, on an adjacent network—could, using just basic privileges, exploit this to gain higher level access. Because it’s rooted in the modem layer (which interfaces closely with baseband hardware), this kind of exploit is especially dangerous.

Notably, the exploit is low-complexity and doesn’t require any user action—no clicking a link, installing an app, or approving a permission request.

Patch Details & Affected Devices

The fix for CVE-2026-58704 arrived as part of the September 2026 Pixel Update Bulletin, published September 15. Beyond this zero-day, the update resolves 110 security flaws in total, among them 12 remote code execution (RCE) and 89 privilege escalation issues deemed high or critical. Critical components such as the IP Multimedia Subsystem, media engines, and the bootloader/Trusted Execution Environment were addressed.

Any Pixel device with Security Patch Level 2026-09-05 or later is protected from CVE-2026-58704 and the other vulnerabilities in this bulletin. Supported models include Pixel 6 series through Pixel 11, plus Pixel Tablet and Fold variants. Owners of Pixel 6 and 6 Pro should note that support ends in October 2026, making this patch among their last major updates.

What Users Should Do Now

Pixel users can install the patch by hopping into Settings > Security & privacy > System & updates > Security update, then rebooting once it’s applied. For advanced users, firmware images are also available for manual flashing.

This vulnerability is being actively exploited with confirmed incidents already in progress. Those most at risk include people regularly targeted by surveillance spyware or state-aligned actors—activists, journalists, executives, etc. For them especially, updating should be treated as urgent.

Every zero-day in the modem is a serious concern because of how deeply invasive it can be. By seizing control close to the baseband, attackers gain a stealthy launching pad for broader device takeover. With Google flagging this as “limited, targeted,” it likely means narrow but high-value targeting—not mass abuse.
