Recursive Superintelligence, an AI startup that emerged from stealth in May with $650 million in funding, has entered into a $400 million agreement with Amazon Web Services (AWS) to access substantial computing resources. This multi-year deal is designed to support the company’s development of self-improving AI systems, which require significant computational power.
The $400 million investment represents a major portion of Recursive’s initial funding. However, CEO Richard Socher anticipates this will be the first of many such agreements, suggesting that future deals could be even larger. The company’s focus on self-improving AI means that resources typically allocated to staffing and operations are instead directed toward computational infrastructure. Socher emphasized that their priority is on increasing the number of AI agents rather than human employees.
Unlike some AI partnerships that involve financial investments from cloud providers, this arrangement with AWS is purely transactional, focusing on the provision of computing resources. The scale of the deal allows AWS to tailor its infrastructure to meet Recursive’s specific needs, potentially attracting other foundational AI companies seeking similar support. Jason Bennett, AWS’s Vice President for Startups and Venture Capital, highlighted that the agreement includes co-developing infrastructure specifically designed for companies like Recursive.
Recursive self-improvement (RSI) is considered a pivotal milestone in AI development, where systems can autonomously enhance their capabilities without human intervention. While the exact requirements and timelines for achieving RSI remain subjects of debate, Recursive Superintelligence aims to leverage this approach to develop practical products. Socher indicated that the company plans to release tangible, user-friendly applications within a few months, with initial offerings expected around October.
