OpenAI has introduced ChatGPT Work, an advanced agent integrated with Codex, designed to perform tasks seamlessly across web, mobile, and desktop platforms by leveraging data from user applications. This agent is capable of executing complex, multi-step tasks autonomously, utilizing scheduling features to operate independently. Similar to Anthropic’s Claude Cowork, ChatGPT Work can function in the background across various applications on a user’s computer.
Users can initiate and manage tasks from any device, including smartphones. On desktop systems, OpenAI is consolidating the Codex and ChatGPT applications into a unified experience. ChatGPT Work can access local files and applications to perform tasks or utilize a newly integrated browser to interact with websites, tools, and online files. Additionally, plugins are available to connect various applications and systems to ChatGPT Work. A new ‘Sites’ beta feature enables users to create interactive sites and web applications for reports, live dashboards, and more.
Powering ChatGPT Work are OpenAI’s latest GPT-5.6 models, which are now being rolled out following a limited preview period. The lineup includes Sol, the flagship model; Terra, a balanced model for everyday tasks; and Luna, a cost-efficient option.
OpenAI reports that GPT-5.6 Sol achieves state-of-the-art results in coding, knowledge work, cybersecurity, and scientific applications, outperforming previous models while utilizing fewer tokens, resulting in lower estimated costs. The model exhibits enhanced coding capabilities and improved design judgment, enabling the creation of ergonomic and functional interfaces with minimal direction. It also produces more accurate presentations, documents, and spreadsheets.
To ensure security, GPT-5.6 incorporates layered protections, including real-time checks, monitoring, and access calibrated to risk and trust levels. It is OpenAI’s most advanced cybersecurity model to date, suitable for code review, threat modeling, and related tasks.
GPT-5.6 is now available across ChatGPT, Codex, and the OpenAI API. The Sol model is accessible to Plus, Pro, Business, and Enterprise users, while Free and Go users have access to the Terra model.
ChatGPT Work is currently available for Pro, Enterprise, and Education plans, with plans to expand to Plus and Business plans in the coming days.
In line with the integration of Codex and ChatGPT, OpenAI has released a new ChatGPT desktop application compatible with both Mac and Windows platforms. Users with the existing Codex app can update it to transition to the new ChatGPT desktop app. The previous ChatGPT desktop application has been renamed ChatGPT Classic.
OpenAI’s latest developments with ChatGPT Work and the GPT-5.6 models signify a significant advancement in AI-driven productivity tools. By enabling more autonomous and efficient task execution across various platforms, these innovations have the potential to transform workflows for professionals and organizations. The integration of Codex and ChatGPT into a unified desktop application further streamlines user experience, indicating OpenAI’s commitment to creating cohesive and powerful AI solutions.
