OpenAI Rolls Out Ads on Free & Go ChatGPT Tiers in India

OpenAI is introducing advertisements in its ChatGPT Free and Go subscription tiers in India, a move confirmed on August 27, 2026. Earlier in the month, the company updated its terms of service to announce plans to display ads for users on the AI assistant. This change will affect the lower-cost plans most popular in India.

What’s Changing

The rollout will begin with 50 brands, with OpenAI teaming up with major agencies WPP and Omnicom to deliver the initial advertising campaigns. Marketers will be able to launch efforts using a newly built ad manager launching next month, with a minimum spend requirement of ₹725 per day (around $7.60 USD).

These changes come as OpenAI’s user base in India has grown rapidly. The company reports having over 100 million weekly active ChatGPT users in India as of February 2026, many on free or Go subscriptions.

Why India First

OpenAI has made India a priority market in its growth strategy. In August 2025 it launched the ChatGPT Go plan priced under $5. For a time, the Go tier was offered free under a limited promotional offer. The company has also heavily invested in local marketing, especially during major cricket leagues like the Indian Premier League (IPL) and Women’s Premier League (WPL), as well as appointing Uber’s former India head to spearhead expansion there.

Part of a Broader Shift

This rollout in India follows OpenAI’s earlier efforts to monetize free-tier users elsewhere. In February, ads started showing up in the U.S., and earlier in August in Europe.

Financially, the timing aligns with OpenAI pushing toward an expected IPO this year or next. In Q2 2026 it pulled in $6.7 billion in revenue, a jump from $5.7 billion in Q1. The company has public targets, including an aim for 220 million paying subscribers by 2030.

What this means: For many in India, ChatGPT’s free and Go tiers will soon carry ads, entering users into earlier-stage exposure to marketing. Businesses will gain new channels of visibility inside ChatGPT conversations, but users may find the experience different. Keep an eye on how this rollout influences adoption of paid tiers and what safeguards OpenAI puts in place for ad relevance and user privacy.
