OpenAI Expands GPT-5.6 Access to Free and Go Users

OpenAI has announced a significant expansion of its ChatGPT service, introducing the latest GPT-5.6 models to both Free and Go tier users. This update eliminates previous text chat limitations, allowing users to engage in unlimited conversations.

The GPT-5.6 series comprises two distinct models tailored to different user segments. GPT-5.6 Sol is now available to Plus and Pro subscribers, while GPT-5.6 Luna serves Free and Go users. Notably, GPT-5.6 Sol integrates both instant responses and deep reasoning capabilities into a unified model, addressing prior inconsistencies in response tone when switching between quick answers and more thoughtful analysis.

To enhance user control, Plus and Pro subscribers can now adjust the computational effort ChatGPT dedicates to each query via a new slider. This feature allows users to balance between rapid responses for everyday questions and more comprehensive analysis for tasks such as coding, planning, and research.

Improvements in response accuracy are central to this release. Internal testing indicates a substantial reduction in factual errors—approximately 62% with GPT-5.6 Luna and 68% with GPT-5.6 Sol—compared to the previous GPT-5.5 Instant model. This advancement addresses longstanding concerns about AI-generated misinformation, particularly regarding facts, dates, and figures.

Free and Go users benefit significantly from this rollout. GPT-5.6 Luna becomes the default model for these tiers, and starting next week, users will enjoy unlimited text chats without the previous rate limitations. Additionally, a new ‘Think’ button enables free users to engage deeper reasoning for complex questions, though certain safeguards remain in place to prevent misuse. Restrictions on file uploads, image generation, and other tools will continue to apply.

OpenAI has also implemented enhanced safety measures, particularly for users under 18. These include restrictions on romantic roleplay, age-sensitive content, and prompts that encourage seeking real-world support when necessary.

It’s important to note that the chat-optimized version of GPT-5.6 Sol will not extend to OpenAI’s Work or Codex products, which will maintain their current model configurations.

This expansion reflects OpenAI’s ongoing commitment to democratizing access to advanced AI technologies while improving the factual reliability of its consumer offerings. By providing broader access to GPT-5.6, OpenAI aims to empower a wider audience with more accurate and versatile AI interactions.
