Okta Acquires AI Security Startup Permiso for $200M

Okta, a leader in identity management, has announced its acquisition of Permiso Security, an AI-driven identity security startup. This strategic move aims to bolster Okta’s capabilities in protecting machine identities, including AI agents, as enterprises increasingly integrate autonomous software into their operations.

While the financial terms were not officially disclosed, sources indicate the deal is valued at just under $200 million, primarily in cash. The acquisition is anticipated to close in the third quarter of Okta’s fiscal year 2027, pending customary closing conditions.

Permiso, founded by former FireEye executives Paul Nguyen and Jason Martin, specializes in detecting suspicious activities within cloud environments post-access. Their platform has evolved to monitor AI agents and other machine identities, addressing the growing need for comprehensive security in the era of artificial intelligence.

In April 2024, Permiso secured an $18.5 million Series A funding round led by Altimeter Capital, valuing the Palo Alto-based startup at approximately $80 million post-money. This acquisition marks a significant step for Okta in enhancing its identity security offerings, particularly in the realm of AI and machine identities.

Okta’s Chief Product Officer, Ely Kahn, emphasized that integrating Permiso’s technology will extend Okta’s identity security framework, providing advanced threat detection and response capabilities. This move reflects Okta’s commitment to staying ahead in the rapidly evolving landscape of identity security, especially as AI becomes more prevalent in enterprise environments.

As organizations continue to adopt AI-driven solutions, securing machine identities becomes paramount. Okta’s acquisition of Permiso positions the company to offer more robust protection against emerging threats targeting these non-human entities. This development underscores the importance of proactive security measures in the face of evolving cyber risks associated with AI integration.
