Meta has unveiled ‘Facebook Verified,’ a complimentary badge designed to authenticate the identities of Facebook users, distinguishing genuine profiles from AI-generated or fraudulent accounts.
The verification process involves users recording a brief video selfie, which Meta cross-references with existing profile photos to confirm authenticity. This procedure is free and typically completed within minutes. Eligibility requires users to be at least 18 years old, adhere to Meta’s Community Standards concerning fraud and deceptive practices, and maintain a history free from inauthentic behavior. Notably, the badge is exclusive to personal profiles and is not available for Pages or ProMode accounts, emphasizing its focus on individual user verification rather than businesses or creators.
Once verified, the badge will be displayed across various platform features, including Marketplace, Dating, Groups, and Profile sections, with plans to extend visibility to Feed posts in the future. This initiative is distinct from ‘Meta Verified,’ the company’s existing paid subscription service that offers a verified badge along with additional benefits like impersonation protection and direct account support. In contrast, ‘Facebook Verified’ is entirely free and specifically aims to confirm user authenticity without the added premium features.
The rollout of ‘Facebook Verified’ will occur in phases, beginning in select markets, with Meta intending to expand availability globally over time.
By introducing this free verification badge, Meta addresses growing concerns about online authenticity and the proliferation of fake accounts. This move not only enhances user trust but also aligns with broader industry efforts to promote transparency and security on social media platforms. As digital interactions become increasingly integral to daily life, such measures are crucial in fostering a safer and more reliable online environment.
