With the launch of macOS 27 “Golden Gate,” Apple has officially ended compatibility with Intel-based Macs. The update, rolling out today after a three-month beta cycle, installs only on Macs equipped with Apple silicon (M1 or newer), aligning with Apple’s earlier declaration that macOS 26 “Tahoe” would be the final macOS version to support Intel hardware. Golden Gate arrives packed with design tweaks, performance boosts, and the introduction of deeper AI features including the newest version of Siri.
Which Macs fall off—and what Apple promises next
Certain Intel-era models, despite being compatible with macOS Tahoe, will not support Golden Gate. Among them are the 13-inch MacBook Pro (2020, four Thunderbolt‐3 ports), 16-inch MacBook Pro (2019), 27-inch iMac (2020), and 2019 Mac Pro. Apple is, however, committed to maintaining security updates for Intel Macs for three years—even as major feature updates no longer arrive.
Golden Gate supports all Macs built with Apple silicon from 2020 onward, including the MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, Mac mini, iMac, Mac Studio, and newer Mac Pros released starting in 2023. It remains the final macOS release to include Apple’s full Rosetta translation layer, enabling Intel-based applications to continue running on Apple silicon machines.

Besides cutting Intel support, Golden Gate delivers a suite of updates: a refined user interface with design improvements, enhanced system performance, and more robust Apple Intelligence features—among them a more capable Siri. These changes mark part of Apple’s broader shift toward AI integration across its platforms.
This release is the culmination of a broader transition Apple began years ago, moving away from Intel’s x86 architecture and investing in its own silicon. With Rosetta—a compatibility layer allowing Intel-only apps to run on new Macs—still included here, Golden Gate offers a smoother bridge for users making the jump to Apple silicon.
Why this change matters:by ending Intel compatibility, Apple can focus on optimizing macOS for its own hardware architecture—improving battery life, thermal performance, and security. Developers will be able to rely on a more consistent hardware baseline when building new apps. But for users with older Intel Macs, the shift means no more feature additions—security updates only, until the March 2029 cutoff when even those may cease unless plans change.
