macOS 27 Golden Gate: Hands-On with Major New Features

Apple’s latest operating system, macOS 27 Golden Gate, is currently in beta and slated for a fall release. This update introduces significant enhancements, including a more intelligent Siri, updates to the Liquid Glass interface, and a suite of new Apple Intelligence features.

Enhanced Siri Integration

In macOS Golden Gate, Siri is now integrated into Spotlight. By pressing Command + Space, users can access a new “Search or Ask” interface, allowing for file searches or posing questions to Siri. This integration enables Siri to access data on the Mac and answer a wide range of questions, combining personal context with general knowledge. This functionality surpasses that of other AI services like ChatGPT or Claude.

Siri’s responses appear directly in Spotlight, with options for follow-up questions. Additionally, a standalone Siri app records all past interactions. System-wide features like “Write with Siri” allow Siri to compose emails and messages in the user’s writing style, check grammar, and provide feedback on written content.

Visual Intelligence and Apple Intelligence Features

Apple has introduced Visual Intelligence to the Mac, accessible through the screenshot interface. Users can select areas of their display to learn more about specific content, with Siri providing relevant information. In applications like Safari, selecting text or images and querying Siri about them is now possible. Features from the iPhone, such as identifying plants and animals or determining the nutritional value of food in images, have been extended to the Mac.

Apple Intelligence enhances built-in Mac applications. Safari can now group similar tabs by subject, the Passwords app can automatically update weak passwords, and Photos offers AI editing tools for adjusting framing and perspective. The new Image Playground feature generates photorealistic images.

Shortcuts utilizes AI to create shortcuts based on natural language requests. Calendar supports natural language event input, Mail search has improved with quick action suggestions, and the Messages app offers AI-driven suggestions, such as inserting photos to send to contacts.

Liquid Glass Interface Updates

The Liquid Glass interface has received several updates in macOS Golden Gate. A new slider allows users to adjust overall system opacity. Improvements in refraction and contrast enhance readability, and unified sidebars reduce wasted space. Additionally, many unnecessary icons have been removed from menu bars, streamlining the user interface.

macOS 27 Golden Gate represents a significant advancement in integrating AI capabilities into the Mac ecosystem. The enhanced Siri and Apple Intelligence features aim to provide a more personalized and efficient user experience. The updates to the Liquid Glass interface address previous design criticisms, offering a more refined and user-friendly environment. As Apple continues to innovate, these developments highlight the company’s commitment to enhancing productivity and user satisfaction on the Mac platform.
