Apple has been rumored to be developing a new smart home device that integrates a speaker and a display, informally dubbed the ‘HomePad.’ This device is expected to serve as a central hub for home automation, featuring a square display approximately six inches in size, designed for both wall mounting and countertop placement. Its launch is anticipated alongside the new iPhone models in September.
In contrast, OpenAI has maintained a veil of secrecy around its hardware project. Over a year ago, Jony Ive and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman teased a groundbreaking device, hinting at a novel form factor unlike any existing smart devices. Altman described it as ‘the coolest piece of technology that the world will have ever seen.’
However, subsequent reports have tempered these expectations. Recent information suggests that the device may be a smart speaker equipped with a camera, capable of performing tasks similar to those of Visual Intelligence or Ray-Ban Meta glasses.
Further insights emerged from a recent interview with OpenAI President Greg Brockman. When questioned about the device’s nature, Brockman deferred to ChatGPT, which described it as ‘something ambient and low friction, voice first but not voice only and with a clear privacy signal.’ Brockman also mentioned that OpenAI is ‘building a family of devices,’ hinting at multiple products in development. When asked about the inclusion of a screen, Brockman responded, ‘We’ll just have to see,’ leaving room for speculation.
These developments suggest that OpenAI’s upcoming device may not be as revolutionary as initially implied.
