Joby Aviation Expands Defense Capabilities with $500M Acquisition

Joby Aviation, a leader in electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) aircraft, has announced a definitive agreement to acquire Resonant Sciences for $500 million in cash and stock. This strategic move marks a significant expansion into the defense sector for the California-based company.

Resonant Sciences, headquartered in Ohio, specializes in radio frequency and sensor systems. Post-acquisition, it will operate as Joby’s dedicated defense division, with co-founder and CEO J. Micah North at the helm. This new division will integrate Joby’s existing defense projects, including the development of turbine-electric and hydrogen-electric aircraft, as well as autonomous technology initiatives.

By establishing a separate defense-focused unit, Joby aims to streamline its operations, allowing the core business to concentrate on certifying, manufacturing, and launching its electric air taxi services. This approach underscores Joby’s commitment to both commercial and defense aviation sectors.

Joby’s foray into defense isn’t new. In 2025, the company partnered with L3Harris Technologies to explore the development of a gas-turbine hybrid VTOL aircraft capable of autonomous flight for defense applications. This aircraft, based on Joby’s S4 platform, demonstrated a hydrogen-electric hybrid version that successfully flew 521 miles, showcasing its extended range capabilities.

The acquisition of Resonant Sciences not only enhances Joby’s technological portfolio but also brings immediate financial benefits. Resonant reported $100 million in trailing 12-month revenue and holds access to classified U.S. government programs. This revenue stream is particularly valuable as Joby continues the costly process of developing, certifying, and mass-producing eVTOLs.

In a similar strategy to bolster revenue, Joby acquired Blade Air Mobility’s helicopter rideshare business in 2025 for approximately $125 million. This acquisition provided Joby with access to a network of 12 terminals in key markets, including New York City, and contributed significantly to its revenue, with $36.2 million of the $38.6 million reported in the second quarter coming from Blade’s operations.

Joby Aviation’s strategic acquisitions reflect a calculated approach to diversify its operations and revenue streams. By integrating Resonant Sciences, Joby not only strengthens its position in the defense sector but also secures a steady income source, balancing the financial demands of its ambitious eVTOL development and commercialization plans.
