iPad mini 8 Lasts Well Over 14 Hours in Early Battery Tests

The new iPad mini (8th generation) is already outperforming expectations when it comes to battery life, according to early independent testing.

Tom’s Guide put the device through its standard Wi-Fi test—continuous web browsing at 150 nits brightness—and recorded a runtime of 14 hours and 24 minutes. That beats Apple’s official “up to 10 hours” estimate for web surfing over Wi-Fi, a figure the company lists for both the mini 8 and its predecessor, the mini 7. For comparison, the mini 7 lasted roughly 10 hours and 36 minutes under the same conditions. Even though only a single run was completed for the review, the tester expects repeated runs to yield similar results.

Apple sticks with the “up to 10 hours” battery life metric, however, per its published specs.

What’s behind the improvement?

Interestingly, the mini 8’s battery capacity is slightly smaller than that of the mini 7. Despite this, gains may come from more efficient chipset performance and the switch to OLED display technology. In particular, the A20 Pro chip—paired with OLED—offers power savings especially when displaying darker content.

Cellular connectivity also got a bump: the mini 8 includes Apple’s newer C2 modem, which reportedly uses power more efficiently than past modems. That said, the battery test in question was conducted using Wi-Fi, so the modem improvements weren’t directly in play.

Launch details & pricing

The mini 8 goes on sale this Friday. U.S. pricing starts at $699.

This early test suggests that real-world battery life on the iPad mini 8 could eclipse what Apple officially claims. If further tests confirm these findings, Apple’s marketing may need to budget for more generous expectations. For consumers, this could mean that despite its smaller size and similar advertised specs, the mini 8 offers a significant value in endurance—especially for users who rely on the iPad for reading, media consumption, or travel without easy access to charging.

As more reviews roll in, key things to look for will include consistency across multiple battery tests, performance under real‐life mixed usage, and how OLED vs. LCD content impacts battery drain. If those all hold up, the mini 8 may be the best pick yet in Apple’s compact tablet lineup.
