Apple’s forthcoming iOS 27 update maintains compatibility with iPhone 11 and newer models, including the second-generation iPhone SE and later. However, only a select few devices will support the complete suite of new features upon the update’s release in September.
While iOS 27 continues the device compatibility list from iOS 26, the introduction of advanced features like the new Siri AI and expanded Apple Intelligence capabilities depends heavily on hardware specifications. This dependency effectively categorizes supported iPhones into three distinct tiers.
Top-Tier Devices with Full Feature Support
The iPhone 17 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro Max, and iPhone Air are the only current models that will support every new Siri AI feature in iOS 27. These devices are equipped with Apple’s most advanced on-device Apple Intelligence model, enabling enhanced accuracy for speech-to-text dictation and the ability to customize Siri’s voice expressiveness and pace.
The exclusivity of these features is primarily due to memory requirements. The on-device model powering these enhancements necessitates a minimum of 12GB of RAM, a specification met only by the iPhone 17 Pro models and iPhone Air. In contrast, the iPhone 17 and iPhone 17e are equipped with 8GB of RAM, insufficient for these advanced features.
Mid-Tier Devices with Standard Feature Support
The entire iPhone 16 lineup, including the iPhone 16e, along with the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, will support standard Siri AI and Apple Intelligence features. This includes the redesigned Siri interface and the new standalone Siri app, which integrate personal context, onscreen awareness, and web knowledge for more natural interactions and in-app actions. Additionally, these devices will have access to new photo-editing tools like Extend and Spatial Reframing.
Entry-Level Devices with Limited Feature Support
Devices ranging from the iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Plus down to the iPhone 11 will receive the iOS 27 update without Apple Intelligence or the new Siri enhancements. However, these older models will still benefit from improvements such as an upgraded CPU scheduler designed to handle tasks more efficiently, as well as rebuilt system search functionalities and refinements to Liquid Glass.
It’s important to note a regional limitation: Siri AI will not be available on any iPhone or iPad within the European Union at launch due to regulatory constraints.
Looking ahead, this tiered feature support underscores the increasing importance of hardware capabilities in delivering advanced software functionalities. As Apple continues to innovate, users may need to consider hardware specifications more closely when seeking access to the latest features.
