Apple’s upcoming iOS 27 is set to significantly improve messaging between iPhone and Android users by introducing support for inline replies and enhanced photo reactions in RCS (Rich Communication Services) conversations.
In the latest iOS 27 beta 2, users can now long-press on a message within the Messages app to access a ‘Reply’ option, enabling threaded conversations. This feature allows for more organized and contextually relevant discussions. On the Android side, Google Messages displays these replies with the original message included above, ensuring clarity across platforms.
Additionally, photo reactions have been refined. Previously, reacting to a photo would generate a text description of the reaction. With iOS 27, these reactions are now represented by emojis, providing a more intuitive and visually appealing experience.
These enhancements align with the RCS Universal Profile 2.7, released in June 2024, which introduced support for replies and reactions, including custom reactions. The update also brought capabilities such as editing, recalling, and deleting sent messages for all parties involved.
iOS 27 is anticipated to launch publicly in September, with a public beta expected to commence in July. Early builds have demonstrated unexpected stability, suggesting a smooth rollout. This development follows the introduction of end-to-end encryption for cross-platform RCS messaging in iOS 26.5, released in May.
By integrating these features, Apple is enhancing the messaging experience between iPhone and Android users, making cross-platform communication more seamless and user-friendly. This move reflects a broader industry trend towards improving interoperability and user experience in messaging services.
