Historian Critiques Tech Leaders’ Misreading of Sci-Fi and Threat to Democracy

In her forthcoming book, “The Rise and Fall of the Artificial State,” historian Jill Lepore examines how technology companies are increasingly assuming roles traditionally held by democratic governments. She describes this shift as a regression to “tyranny and mystification,” characterized by governance through algorithms and corporate entities.

During a recent interview, Lepore emphasized that her critique is not directed at technology itself but at the manner in which private corporations have gradually taken over state functions without public consent. She notes that while many technological advancements aimed to enhance efficiency and reduce costs, the past two decades have seen a deliberate move by these corporations to usurp governmental roles.

Lepore also highlights that many tech leaders, particularly Elon Musk, draw inspiration from science fiction and comic books. However, she argues that their interpretations often misalign with the original themes of these works, leading to a vision of the future that contradicts their professed political beliefs.

As technology companies continue to expand their influence, Lepore’s insights serve as a crucial reminder of the need to scrutinize the balance between technological innovation and democratic governance. The challenge lies in ensuring that advancements serve the public interest without undermining the foundational principles of democracy.
