Google has just released new firmware updates for both the Chromecast with Google TV lineup and the Nest Wifi Pro systems, bringing improvements across performance, security, and networking. These are the first major firmware rollouts of 2026 for these devices, and while some are live now, others are pending the public release.
Chromecast with Google TV—what’s changing
The firmware update for the Chromecast 4K version has already begun rolling out. It carries over the Android security patch level for August 2026, but adds enhancements centered on connectivity, media streaming experience, and display performance. The update also aims to make the system more stable through general bug fixes.
Meanwhile, the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) model has been confirmed to receive the same update. As of now, though, Google hasn’t published the firmware version for that device yet, leaving the rollout status somewhat unclear.
Nest Wifi Pro—network improvements & security boosts
For the Nest Wifi Pro, Google has outlined several key updates. Networking features are getting a boost: users will benefit from automatic fallback to the ISP’s DNS when public DNS servers are blocked, and more dependable node setup during installation or recovery situations.
On the platform and wireless side, the update improves mesh network signal strength (RSSI) and client steering, along with more stable handling of WPA supplicant and the Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP) client. Finally, ecosystem and security upgrades roll in Google Home platform updates alongside comprehensive security enhancements.
That said, the updated firmware hasn’t yet been deployed broadly. Both Google’s support site and users’ devices are still running version 3.78.518349, which was released back in February or March 2026.
For Nest Wifi (2019) devices, similar updates have been published. These include improved mesh network resilience, DNS fallback improvements, and additional stability and security fixes, continuing Google’s trend of refining its home networking gear.
Why this matters: Firmware updates like these are essential for maintaining reliable home streaming and networking. Enhancements to connectivity, display performance, and mesh stability directly impact user experience, especially in multi-device households or ones relying heavily on Wi-Fi throughout the home. The delayed rollout for some devices shows the challenge in pushing updates to a wide spectrum of hardware without introducing regressions.
