Google Messages is enhancing user experience by introducing ‘Chat themes,’ a feature that allows Android users to personalize their messaging interface with custom colors and wallpapers. This update replaces the previous ‘Change colors’ option, which offered nine color choices for message bubbles and backgrounds since its introduction in 2024.
With ‘Chat themes,’ users can now select from a variety of color palettes that align with the system-level Dynamic Color schemes. Additionally, the feature offers a selection of wallpapers categorized into themes such as Animals, Architecture, Black & White, Cityscapes, Landscapes, Macro, Space, Sunsets, and Textures. Users also have the option to upload their own images for a more personalized touch.
Notably, any changes made through ‘Chat themes’ are visible only to the user who applies them, marking a shift from the previous approach where theme changes were applied to all participants in a conversation. This ensures that personalization preferences remain individual and do not affect the chat experience of others.
The rollout of ‘Chat themes’ is currently underway, with the feature appearing in the latest beta version of Google Messages (version 20260622_01_RC00). Users may notice a red dot badge on the overflow menu, indicating the availability of the new ‘Chat theme’ option. As with many Google updates, this feature is being released in stages, so it may take some time before it becomes widely accessible to all users.
The introduction of ‘Chat themes’ aligns Google Messages with other modern messaging platforms that offer extensive customization options. This move addresses a longstanding user request for more personalization features within the app, enhancing the overall user experience and engagement.
As Google continues to refine and expand the capabilities of its messaging platform, users can anticipate further enhancements that cater to personalization and usability. The addition of ‘Chat themes’ not only enriches the visual appeal of conversations but also reflects Google’s commitment to meeting user demands for a more tailored messaging experience.
