Gemini Live Enhances Chrome Beta on iPhone with Seamless Voice Interaction
Google has introduced Gemini Live to the Chrome Beta on iPhone, enabling users to engage in live voice conversations directly within the browser. This integration marks the first instance of Chrome on iOS supporting Gemini Live without necessitating the standalone Gemini app.
Understanding Gemini Live
Gemini Live is Google’s voice conversation feature for Gemini, facilitating spoken interactions with real-time responses and captions. Previously accessible through the Gemini app on both Android and iOS, this functionality is now embedded within Chrome on iPhone, streamlining user experience.
Activation and Interface
In supported TestFlight builds of Chrome Beta, a Gemini button appears in the address bar. Tapping this button opens a floating interface featuring a dedicated Gemini Live shortcut. Selecting this shortcut launches a compact Live window overlaying the current webpage.
Before initiating Gemini Live, Chrome presents a consent screen detailing microphone access, recording policies, privacy considerations as outlined in the Gemini Apps Privacy Notice, and current limitations of the Live feature. Upon user approval, Gemini Live activates within Chrome, operating as a floating panel during browsing sessions.
The interface is optimized for mobile screens, occupying minimal display space even with live captions enabled. When the session becomes inactive, Chrome displays a Gemini on hold message.
User Experience and Functionality
Once a Live session is active, the behavior of the Gemini button in the address bar changes. Instead of reopening the standard Gemini interface, tapping the button returns users to the ongoing conversation. Users can revert to the regular Gemini interface via the pause control within the Live panel. The floating Live bar remains visible across different webpages and tabs, ensuring continuity.
During testing by The Mac Observer, Gemini Live effectively responded to voice queries on current news topics and recent smartphone releases in India. Conversations persisted across various webpages without reverting to the standard Gemini view. The panel includes features such as live captions, pause controls, a hold state, and access to Gemini settings within Chrome.
Current Limitations and Availability
While Chrome currently displays a voice selection option, this control was unresponsive during testing. Additionally, the onboarding screen indicates that certain Gemini Live capabilities are not yet available.
Gemini Live is presently functional in Chrome 149 Beta for iOS through TestFlight builds. Users may need to enable a related experimental flag for Gemini Live to appear. Chromium code changes have already referenced Gemini Live controls in Chrome’s address bar on iPhone.
Chrome on iOS already offers Gemini features for webpage summaries and contextual prompts. Google is also testing Gemini explanations for selected text and image remix capabilities within the browser. The integration of Gemini Live brings voice conversations directly into the browser, eliminating the need for the standalone Gemini app.
