Google has begun rolling out version 5.03 of its Health app, introducing several enhancements aimed at improving user experience on both Android and iOS platforms.
Expanded Metrics on the Today Tab
Users can now add a broader range of health metrics directly to the Today tab for more convenient daily tracking. Newly available metrics include heart rate variability, breathing rate, oxygen saturation (SpO2), resting heart rate, skin temperature variation, blood glucose levels, mindful days, mindful minutes, resilience, protein intake, fat intake, carbohydrate intake, and friend leaderboard standings. Previously, these metrics were accessible only through the Health tab; their inclusion in the Today tab allows for quicker, at-a-glance monitoring.
Enhanced Sleep Tracking Features
The update introduces a more comprehensive approach to sleep tracking. Naps lasting over 20 minutes are now incorporated into the total 24-hour sleep duration, providing a more accurate reflection of overall rest. Users can view trends over time for both their main sleep sessions and total sleep—including naps—within the Sleep tab. The Today tab will continue to display the duration of the main sleep session.
Fitness and Activity Improvements
Version 5.03 addresses specific issues related to fitness tracking. It resolves inaccuracies in swimming exercise data, ensuring correct distances and units are recorded. Additionally, discrepancies in elevation gain data between the Google Health app and third-party services like Strava have been corrected, offering users more consistent and reliable activity metrics.
iOS-Specific Enhancements
For iOS users, this update brings features that were previously introduced to Android in version 5.02. These include simplified reordering of Key Metrics in the Health tab through a drag-and-drop interface, improved food search functionality displaying serving units and calorie information, and enhanced visibility of recorded naps within the daily Sleep Score view.
These updates reflect Google’s ongoing commitment to refining the Health app, aiming to provide users with more accurate data and a more intuitive interface. As health tracking becomes increasingly integral to daily life, such enhancements are crucial in helping users make informed decisions about their well-being.
