Google has enhanced its AI Mode on Android by introducing a feature that allows users to search through their previous chat history. This update aims to improve user experience by facilitating easier access to past conversations.
To utilize this new functionality, users can open the navigation drawer within the Google app or directly from the AI Mode homepage. At the top of the drawer, a new “Search threads” bar is now available. Adjacent to this search field is a settings gear icon that provides access to the full My Activity page, where users can manage their activity history.
Engaging with the “Search threads” bar opens a fullscreen interface designed for straightforward navigation through past chats. This feature enables users to seamlessly continue previous conversations without the need to manually scroll through extensive chat logs. The rollout of this feature is currently underway, with widespread availability on both iOS and Android platforms.
Previously, the capability to search chat history was limited to the web interface. The expansion to mobile devices signifies Google’s commitment to enhancing the accessibility and functionality of AI Mode across various platforms.
In addition to the chat history search feature, the iOS version of the Google app has received a redesign of the prompt box. Announced during the I/O 2026 event in May, the updated prompt box now appears as a floating, rounded rectangle, replacing the previous design that was docked at the bottom of the screen. A notable enhancement within this redesign is the inclusion of a ‘plus’ menu, which introduces the ability to upload files directly from mobile devices—a feature that was previously exclusive to the web version at google.com/ai. As of now, these changes are not widely available on Android devices.
